Abstract


Objectives: The purpose of this study to offer a basic questionnaire to dental hygiene students, to determine their overall satisfaction with their academic major, with the aim of increasing self-confidence through a positive learning experience, and a sense of pride as a dental hygienist.

Methods: Questionnaires were handed out from September to October 2018, 319 students from the department of dental hygiene in the J region.

Results: The factors that appeared to increase the major satisfaction choice were happiness with university life, voluntarily selecting dental hygiene as a major, the desire to work in a hospital dental clinic, viewing dental hygiene work as a life-long occupation that allows higher critical thinking, and the view that being a dental hygienist is a specialized job. The explanatory power of the model was approximately 48.4%.

Conclusions: The department of dental hygiene, trains students to become professional dental personnel. To increase education efficiency and student dental hygienists¡¯ satisfaction, the curricular contents need to not only reflect the students critical thinking ability, but also their desired professional future.
